How To Choose The Best Shaving Razors
When Jeff Bezos started Amazon-dot-com back in 1994-95 it was simply an online bookstore and featured no items such as shaving razors and the like. The name was originally ‘Cadabra’, as in ‘Abracadabra’, a word favored by stage magicians and, for those old enough to remember, a famous song by the Steve Miller Band. But when it was learned that many people heard the word ‘Cadabra’ as ‘Cadaver’ (which, of course, is a dead body) the name was quickly changed to ‘Amazon’. It was a good choice.
The name ‘Amazon’ was supposedly chosen for two reasons. Firstly, this is the name of the largest river in the world and Jeff was hoping to create the largest online bookstore through his marketing efforts. Secondly, choosing a name beginning with the letter ‘A’ would ensure being found near the beginning of any subsequent alphabetical list in which the name was included. Now, some decade and a half later, Amazon has become the largest online retailer in the U.S. and sells just about anything you could possibly imagine. In fact, its sales volume is three times that of the second largest online retailer, which happens to be a company called ‘Staples’.
Here’s a fairly reliable piece of advice when it comes to buying anything online. Go to Amazon first and type in the name or category of the item in which you’re interested. In this case, just type in ‘shaving razors’ and see what comes up. What you’ll receive is a wealth of information designed to make your buying experience as informed as possible. The best part, though, is where you’re able to see ratings and reviews from others who have already purchased and used the item you’re considering. This information can be quite helpful in the decision making process.

If you’re looking to buy a new razor you have basically two choices initially – electric razors or the manual type. While electrics have improved significantly over the years they still are unable to provide as close a shave as a manual and many can’t use them because of the irritation involved. Manual razors are by far still the most popular.
With manuals you have a host of options including one bladed, two bladed, 3, 4 and 5 bladed as well. There are razors that are disposable, ones where the handle is reused but the blade is disposable and versions that use a throw away cartridge containing any number of blades. Many consumers have been duped into believing the advertising hype that each new generation of ‘new and improved’ systems will give the ‘best shave ever’. They’ve tried the new ones and often been disappointed. And all the while these razors keep getting more and more costly (especially the replacement blades)!
There’s a new trend on the rise where many are going back to using the old style double-edged, single bladed safety razor that Granddad used. New versions of this old style are becoming increasingly popular today and are being sold in huge numbers.
Go to the Amazon site and look at some different options. Read some reviews. Buy a razor that sounds like it might work for you with just a minimal number of extra blades and then just try it out. With shaving razors, what works for one may not suit another. Until you try it, you won’t really know if you like it!
